The Aid by Trade Foundation (AbTF) is spearheading efforts to establish new, more sustainable cotton standards. Their mission is to provide global textile companies with sustainably sourced cotton while ensuring socially and environmentally responsible production conditions in cotton-growing regions. AbTF places a strong emphasis on supporting local, small, and family farmers who adopt more sustainable farming practices. Recognizing that cotton, one of the world's most widely used fabrics, has historically had a devastating impact on the environment, the foundation is committed to driving improvements at multiple levels of production.
Initially, AbTF set up the "Cotton made in Africa Organic" standard, which has been instrumental in promoting sustainable cotton farming across the African continent. Building on this success, the foundation is now expanding its efforts to India. In collaboration with 5,000 small-scale farmers, AbTF aims to replicate its sustainable model. This exciting development was announced earlier this year at a cotton conference held in Mumbai. These initiatives represent some of the most significant steps toward preserving natural resources and restructuring fabric production in environmentally friendly ways. The comprehensive circular system envisioned by AbTF—engaging local farmers, linking them with fashion companies, and establishing overarching standards—promises to bring about substantial improvements in the textile industry.
By fostering sustainable cotton farming practices, the Aid by Trade Foundation is not only helping to safeguard the environment but also ensuring that the cotton industry can thrive in a way that is beneficial for both people and the planet.
