Haute Couture is high-end fashion that is custom-made, handcrafted, and created using the finest quality materials. The term comes from the French language, with "haute" meaning "high" or "elegant," and "couture" meaning "sewing" or "dressmaking."

Haute Couture first emerged in France in the mid-19th century, when Charles Frederick Worth established the first couture house in Paris. Worth's atelier became known for its luxurious and intricate designs, which were made to measure and created for individual clients.

Over time, other couture houses emerged, such as Chanel, Dior, and Givenchy, and Haute Couture became synonymous with luxury, exclusivity, and elegance. The Haute Couture industry reached its peak in the mid-20th century, with glamorous runway shows and high society clientele.

The fashion history of this era was defined by the symbolic significance attached to luxury brands, which experienced a surge in popularity during the 1980s as people sought association with these distinguished labels, including both Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter (ready to wear). Even if one could not afford genuine Chanel, a simple t-shirt with the brand's logo or perfume would suffice.

Developing an emotional connection with fashion brands entails more than just a desire to establish one's social standing; it is also about embracing certain values and aesthetics. This distinction is commonly referred to as a lifestyle.
However, with the rise of ready-to-wear fashion and changing social and economic trends, the Haute Couture industry faced challenges. Today, there are only a handful of official Haute Couture houses recognized by the French Ministry of Industry.
In the present day, Haute Couture revolves more around the prestige of the brand and capturing attention with exceptionally artistic and stunningly crafted apparel. Among the latest designers to achieve recognition in the Haute Couture industry is Iris Van Herpen, who specializes in integrating technology into her exquisite and impressive designs.

As contemporary fashion has utilized all the novelties and fashion evolves at a rapid pace, Haute Couture has now come to represent exceptional handmade quality and exclusivity, primarily donned by celebrities on the red carpet or stage. We love it when fashion serves as a medium for artistic expression.
